On the Origin of Evolution – Tracing Darwin’s Dangerous Idea from Aristotle to DNA By John and Mary Cribbin
The theory of evolution through natural selection lurks on a dangerous corner of a sidewalk in mankind’s perceptions, ridden with moral questions over the rights of species and egalitarianism in humans, and violently fought-over hypotheses as to our Creator and what in our brains orders the functioning of our cells, and more, makes us think esoterically; and should we be grateful and honour something for these gifts of nature? Where and how did life begin and why, and where will we, as part of an ape species tied to the gravity of a planet called Earth which is tied to an ever-fleeing (from everything else) galaxy of stars, end up? And the first thoughts of evolution began, not in a test tube or computer but with intuition, that human faculty of the brain that is overvalued by religion and undervalued (one feels rather than thinks) by science. Democritus, leader of the ancient Greek Atomists, had never seen a test tube, let alone a super-computer!

We enter the utility of modern human observation and the book The Origin of Evolution by John and Mary Cribbin, an unscientific mistitle considering origins of evolution are not yet discovered. The subject is not a thing invented by a thing but a transformative description of a process that began in the molecular and still haunts those who can remember their first impassioned arguments with Creationists over the mystery. i.e. Life must be ordained and given by a deity like God because bees can fly, have a fluttering, dancing language and can count and record distances whilst they await our stealing of their honey! And they’re brain is much smaller than a pea.
We learn from the book the cruelty of medieval anti-intellectual stone-faced institutions who burnt heretics, nay scientists, who spoke the truth (about the un-flat Earth and earth’s place in the Solar System) and the extraordinary diligence and courage of scientists determined to seek the truth. Alfred Russell Wallace was a socially middling enquirer who had to campaign for funds for his scientific disease-ridden trips to the tropics and then do a dance of academic etiquette around the pedigree, wealth and reputation of Charles Darwin. (Darwin’s uncle was an evolutionists). We learn that women were prejudiced against by the Nobel Committee and I must cite the case of Martha Chase at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory – though there are others – who proved that it was gooey stuff – DNA – that carried instructions of copying virus material into a cell.  Errors of replication in the cell cause evolution – mutations – and the journey is a fascinating one of discovery.
